As Americana Week(s) are set to begin in a few days, we can't help but get excited about all that is going on this month in NYC. We just got back last week from the amazing and intense deKooning Retropective and Diego Rivera Mural Exhibition at MoMA. We took a side trip to PS1 to check out some Emerging & Contemporary Art as well as soaking up some sky at James Turrell's ongoing piece "Meeting" (below).

After packing up our art for the Outsider Art Fair next week, we are treating ourselves to a visit to The Metro Show, including booth talks by Allan Katz, Ricco Maresca, and a walking tour with James Brett (Museum of Everything). We will be thrilled to visit Luise Ross Gallery for the Jose Rivera Exhibit and the opening reception of Dubuffet and Art Brut at Ricco Maresca. Can't wait to see everyone in NYC!

Harriet Wiseman | Family Portrait

Harriet starts her work by blindly putting oils on a blank canvas, waiting for the canvas to reveal what is locked inside. She slips into an almost trance-like state and then throws herself into her work. She has no idea when she begins, what the end result will be. Most of the women and girls in the paintings have the familiar olive-shaped mouth and triangular-shaped face of the artist.

Comparisons are always made with the great artists, whether they were trained or self-taught. Sometimes, the elegant forms of Modigliani or the screaming compelling colors of Soutine can be suggested in Harriet’s work. Like many self-taught artists, The paintings are honest and passionate – perhaps reminiscent of German Expressionism with tenderness and feeling.

In her work there is a colorful patterning of clothing, drapery and fabrics, which make the paintings lively and almost fly off the canvas.

For most of his life, Frank lived in Blakely, Pennsylvania, a small mining town outside of Scranton, where his father, a miner, died in the coal mines. A self-taught artist, his unique style of painting using mixed media, captured the life of the coal miner as no other artist could. He acted as an historian of mining lore and practice. Each painting and sculpture is a record of the actual techniques and mining gear used during the heyday of the Anthracite miner before, during and after World War II.

His art was enhanced by his thorough knowledge of the coal pits. Wyso, however, went beyond mere realism. His art is a mirror of the deeper realities in his miners: their camaraderie; their heroism; and the bedrock of their spirit - their profound stoicism. He has given us a striking symbol of the invincibility of the immigrant miner who helped build industrial America.

Featured Artist Christine Boisseau aka Boistine was born in France (Paris) in 1962. Keen on all sorts of manual creations, she had to wait for a long time before having the opportunity to totally devote herself to creation. She is strongly attracted by carving. Almost all sorts of materials are used with an inclination for natural ones: wood, loam, bones, feathers … Her work is exhibited in many galleries in France and Europe. She also participates to art fairs dedicated to raw art as the Biennale Internationale de Lyon. As she explains, her soul speaks through her hands:

“When I start a painting or a carving, moved by an impulsion, I feel like being in a space full of freedom and possible surprises. There is in my mind the idea of mixing my feelings with all the materials I may find around me. I am found of new experiences. I feel satisfied and happy when I see partners in the eyes of those who are looking at my creations.”

The Outsider Folk Art Gallery, located on the fifth floor of the Goggleworks Center for the Arts, is pleased to host a new exhibition showcasing artwork from the George and Sue Viener Collection of Folk, Self-Taught, and Visionary Art. The exhibit will run from December 2, 2011 to February 17, 2012. The exhibit includes paintings, drawings, and mixed media works on wood, paper, and other materials and is curated by Emily A. Branch, Gallery Director, who joined the Outsider Folk Art Gallery in 2011.

The exhibit will feature work by Jim Bloom (b. 1965) and the late Purvis Young. Both Bloom and Young represent the largest holdings in the Viener collection totaling close to four-thousand active works. This exhibit parallels themes and techniques of each artist, both of whom never met, creating works that are diaries of their physical and psychological environments. Both artists also used uncommon art materials in the traditional sense, often choosing whatever materials they could find or create.

This exhibit has been in the thoughts of the Viener’s for many years and is now coming to fruition as the gallery is due to close in 2012. Recently each artist has had much acclaim in the world of self-taught art. Young, who died in 2010, recently had a masterpiece from the Good Bread Alley series, represented by the Viener’s, doubling the previous auction record. Bloom has been recognized by galleries and prominent collectors on the east and west coasts, which has, in turn, driven the market for his works sending values skyward.

Both Bloom and Young represent the largest holdings in the Viener collection totaling close to four-thousand active works. This exhibit parallels themes and techniques of each artist, both of whom never met, creating works that are diaries of their physical and psychological environments. “I have tried to put nice frames and matting on Bloom pieces for my clients, but they exclaimed they enjoy Bloom rough and raw. It cannot be contained under glass,” said Karl Slocum, Director of Knapp Gallery, Philadelphia, PA.

Slotin results for Viener Collection verifies significance of self-taught collection

Last weekend at Historic Buford Hall, Buford, GA, Slotin Folk Art Auction registered a high bid of $25,000.00 for a 36” diameter painting on metal by the recently deceased artist Purvis Young. The painting was part of the collection of George & Sue Viener of Reading, Berks County, PA. The “Who’s Who of Folk Art” sale featured hundreds of pieces from the local couple, owners of the Outsider Folk Art Gallery, 5th floor, Goggleworks Center for the Arts, Reading, PA.

“I am very pleased that Purvis Young is being recognized in this manner. These masterpieces from the Good Bread Alley Series are examples of Young’s dedication to creating art that reflected his community, culture, and dreams for a better life”, according to owner George Viener.

Most recently this painting, named “Mary and Jesus” was exhibited at the Cohen Gallery at the Goggleworks Center for the Arts, Reading, PA in a solo retrospective show of Young’s work spanning thirty years. The exhibit will continue to travel internationally over the next few years. The Viener’s acquired this collection and the rights to the Purvis Young documentary in 2004 and met with Mr. Young many times before his death in early 2010.

There were many piece of the Slotin Auction that were at or in-line with previous auction records. Two pieces, including "Adam and Eve" by Hugo Sperger (below) were the highest recorded auction prices recorded for this artist. Accordingly, this piece by Sperger is a large example (over six feet wide!) of his skill and dedication to detail.

The most respected medical authority on Peyronie's Disease, Dr. Tom Lue of UCSF Medical Center, recommends only 400mg Pentoxifylline daily until injectible Collagenase becomes available

The sexy art scene at SOFA

SOFA Chicago (the annual Sculpture Objects & Functional Art fair), along with The Intuit Show of Folk & Outsider Art, threw a chic opening night party on Thursday. The art and design world glitterati gathered for the stylish soiree, which took place at Navy Pier's Festival Hall. Guests got a glimpse of works from the more than 60 international galleries that will be represented at this year's expo, which is the 18th for this important, critically acclaimed exhibition.

We sold numermous works by Jim Bloom, Purvis Young, John Williams, a Thornton Dial, and a large Harriet Wiseman piece. We hosted the fabulous art/light sculptures of Warren Muller and sold many of his books to astonished passersbys! Here is a picture of Warren Muller, his daughter Evan, and George at the fair.

The Art Fair Company presents the 18th Annual SOFA CHICAGO 2011 + The Intuit Show of Folk & Outsider Art at Navy Pier’s Festival Hall (600 E. Grand Avenue, Chicago, Ill. 60611) Nov. 4 – 6. This two-fair, three-day art event features contemporary art and design presented by more than 60 international art galleries and dealers at SOFA CHICAGO; and outsider art, ethnographic art, non-traditional folk art and visionary art at The Intuit Show. Joint lecture series and special exhibits are free with paid admission. All artwork is for sale. Tickets are on sale now. One general admission ticket of $15 admits visitors to both fairs, related lecture series, special exhibits and events. $25 three-day passes and discounted student, senior and group tickets are also available. Catalogs are $15. Hours are Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 6, noon to 6 p.m. For tickets or more information visit sofaexpo.com and outsiderfolkartfair.com.

The public is also invited to SOFA CHICAGO and The Intuit Show’s joint Opening Night Public Preview on Thursday, Nov. 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. Preview tickets are $50 and may be purchased in advance at sofaexpo.com or at the door beginning at 5 p.m. The opening night preview is much anticipated by collectors, museum curators, art advisers, interior designers and architects, artists and cognoscenti, because it offers first viewing and the best selection of works on offer, as well as the opportunity to meet and mingle with leading members of the art and design communities. Wine and hors d’oeuvres are included in the price of public preview admission.

Leo Sewell | Brass Torso | 33"h x 19"w x 9"d | $10,000.00

Leo Sewell grew up near a dump. He has played with junk now for fifty years and has developed his own assemblage technique. His works are collected by corporations, museums and individuals throughout the world. Leo continues to cull the refuse of Philadelphia out of which he fashions pieces of all sizes, from a lifesize housecat to a 40 foot installation.

His sculptures are composed of recognizable objects of plastic, metal and wood. These objects are chosen for their color, shape, texture, durability and patina; then they are assembled using nails, bolts, and screws. The outdoor sculptures are constructed of stainless steel, brass, or aluminum found objects which are welded together.

Leo Sewell does work by commission. He can also use objects from the patron's past for a more personal assemblage.
